When you are trying to locate a plot of land your land description will include information as R14e, T21n section 27.  This map (above) will help you in locating those lands that your ancestor purchased.

Randolph County, Indiana has Ranges 12e, 13e, 14e, 15e and 1w; Townships 21n, 20n, 19n, 18n, 19, 18, 17 and 16.  The most north east part is R11, T19 and it has very few sections in it.
